It’s hard to forget Atlanta’s 1996 Summer Olympics with the giant Olympic torch towering over the Downtown Connector. However, this summer we remember more than others, because it’s the 20th anniversary of the games. This Saturday the city will commemorate the occasion with a celebration filled with Olympic dignitaries, live music, and gold medalists.
The ceremony will appropriately take place at Centennial Olympic Park, a park built especially for the ’96 games. Among the evening’s guests will be members of the “Magnificent Seven” U.S.A Women’s Gymnastics team – Kerri Strug fan girls rejoice! The night will also have appearances from Atlanta’s Olympic Chairman Billy Payne, Sports Illustrated Olympian of the Century Carl Lewis, and many others. As an added bonus, the event is free and will end with a fireworks show. Before you tune to Rio in August, take a trip back to Atlanta in 1996.
